Marina of the Week: Oristano

Rent a berth at Porto Turistico Torregrande

Untouched beaches and clean water, Torregrande is a great place to stop your boat and discover the western part of Sardinia. Oristano is a superb location and offers boating enthusiasts the most efficient and modern facilities thanks to the marina at Torregrande, an exemplar of hospitality which has recently been awarded the Blue Flag, and makes an excellent starting point for exploring the whole area.

Oristano, is located on the central west coast of Sardinia, a land of great natural beauty, made famous by the lagoon zones like Cabras, that in summer are painted pink by the huge number of flamingoes.

The old town of the city dates back to the 11th Century and holds the wonderful Torre di San Cristoforo (the tower of St. Christopher), also known as Porta Manna (the big gate). In mediaeval times the city was governed by Eleonora d’Arborea, who was the originator of the Carta de Logu, one of the first codes of law written in Europe.
There are many restaurants where you can experience Sardinian cuisine, but above all you should make your way to the pasticcerie where you can try the famous Vernaccia, a wine that should be tried with the almond pastries typical of the area.
The most eagerly anticipated event of the year is carnival: on Palm Sunday and Shrove Tuesday there is the Sartiglia, an incredible horse riding tournament that the whole town participates in and attracts tourists from all over Europe.

You should also visit the Antiquarium Arborense, at the ancient Palazzo Parpaglia, where you can admire various archaeological finds from the Phoenician-Roman city of Tharros, which was located a few miles away by boat from the marina (for those who want to reach it by sea).

The modern marina of Torre Grande with its 405 berths, allows you to comfortably linger in this corner of paradise with the mighty Spanish tower that gives its name to the area overlooking the splendid beach and coastal village famed for its level of services offered to tourists.
Boaters will be assisted at sea and on land with mooring operations, and the port has a surveillance system in place as well as public lighting. On top of this, the cleaning of the piers, and the collection of waste (including oils, motor filters and used batteries) are included in the services offered and each berth has access to electricity, drinking water and removal of waste water. The port has built-in Wi-Fi services as well as VHF radio, a large car park, a fire fighting service and toilets with showers included.
